The Tonkin Highway Extension supports Western Australia's fast-growing south-east corridor which faces a large volume of traffic to and from the South West and Wheatbelt regions.

The extension works will improve improve road safety, traffic pressure and journey times. The project design also creates better connectivity between current and future residential, business and employment precincts.

This project will extend Tonkin Highway from Thomas Road, Oakford to South Western Highway, south of Mundijong. Approximately 14 kilometres of four-lane dual carriageway from Thomas Road to South Western Highway will be installed.

Construction and upgrades of intersections at Orton Road, Mundijong Road and South Western Highway will also be included.

A grade-separated interchange at Bishop Road and bridges over the existing freight rail line will be installed as part of the project.
