Tanami Road is 1,035 kilometres long and links Alice Springs (NT) to the Great Northern Highway, near Halls Creek (WA). The 313km section in WA is unsealed.

This intrastate route provides access to remote communities, mine sites and attractions.

The project plans to improve wet season road conditions, providing reliable access and connectivity.

Planned works include upgrading and sealing Tanami Road, drainage improvements, bridge construction and providing roadside facilities such as rest areas.

10km of road was constructed and sealed in 2023, with a further 12km of road planned to be sealed by October 2024. Sealing of the full 41km section is planned to be completed in 2025.

More information on the Main Roads WA project is available here.
