Serious flooding as a result of heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Ellie during the 2022/23 summer caused significant damage to parts of the road network in the Kimberley. Main Roads Western Australia crews have commenced recovery and repair works. Three main areas were affected:
Great Northern Highway, Willare section: Preliminary repairs have been completed and the highway is open with traffic management. Permanent repair work has commenced, with completion expected by late-2023.
Fitzroy River Bridge: The bridge sustained significant flood damage and was demolished to allow construction on a new bridge. The New Fitzroy River Bridge officially opened to traffic in late-2023, more than six months ahead of schedule. Visit Main Roads' Fitzroy River Bridge project page for full details.
Gibb River Road: Gibb River Road is open to all vehicles with normal maintenance works in progress.
