The Fremantle Traffic Bridge is being replaced to improve journeys for road, shared path and river users.

Construction on a new crossing over the Swan River is underway This will replace the existing bridge, which has reached the end of its service life. A second dedicated passenger rail bridge will also be constructed, while parts of Canning Highway will be realigned.

The new bridge will feature two traffic lanes in each direction for road users, and wider and safer pedestrian and cyclist paths on each side. Also featuring higher and wider clearances, the new bridge will improve navigational safety for boats, kayaks and river users.

The first three piles were installed at the Fremantle end of the bridge for the temporary jetties during the October 2024. Piling for the North Fremantle jetties are also underway.

An innovative construction approach will be undertaken to allow parts of the new bridge to be built while the existing bridge stays open to traffic. Full closure of the bridge is currently anticipated to occur in late-2025.
