The upgraded Coolgardie-Esperance Highway at Emu Rocks is now open to traffic.

The project involved the realignment and reconstruction of 30 kilometres of highway; upgraded intersections; added passing lanes; widened and reconstructed shoulders; and the installation of road safety barriers along sections of the road.

The Coolgardie Esperance Highway at Emu Rocks forms part of the Perth to Adelaide route on the National Land Transport Network and is the only direct sealed link between Perth and the Eastern States.

It is the major freight route through the region, with around two million tonnes per annum carted on the route, with 34% of all traffic on this section being heavy vehicles and 11% caravans.

Benefits

  • A safer environment for road users
  • Significantly reduced deterioration of the highway shoulders resulting in a reduction of maintenance costs
  • Offers safer overtaking opportunities
  • Contributes to the freight efficiency of both interstate and regional transport associated with the mining industry
